4 Singing Tips for Any Style

February 21, 2025

If you want to explore unique singing techniques to take your voice to the next level, this one's for you.

Learning to adapt your voice to different genres is key for any singer, and there are several fun techniques to try. One of the coolest is the tremolo fall, a technique often used in old-school jazz. You can start by using your speaking voice to experiment with a shaky, trembling sound, similar to a sigh. Once you get the hang of it, your voice will add emotional depth, giving a fragile but beautiful quality to your singing.

Another technique to try is the yodel, which has become popular in country, folk, and even pop music. Yodeling involves a controlled vocal shift, often between chest voice and head voice, which can feel unnatural at first but is easy to achieve once you practice. Start by singing two pitches a fifth apart, then gradually shorten the interval until you’re able to sing seamlessly between the two notes.

Vocal fry is another technique you might already recognize in pop music, especially in artists like Billie Eilish. It’s that creaky sound that starts in your pulse register and transitions into a normal singing tone. Begin with vocal fry and slide into a pure tone on a pitch like "ooh" to get the feel for it.

Lastly, there's the classical trill, an embellishment often used in classical music but also seen in modern pop. The trill involves rapidly moving between two notes, and with practice, you can speed it up and use it as a powerful vocal tool.

These techniques not only expand your vocal range but also allow you to express yourself across various genres. Keep experimenting and have fun with it!
